A monoclonal antibody (mc Ab, 13 C11) directed against a functional epitope of the surface of Plasmodium knowlesi is considered in this brief review. This antibody blocked the invasion of RBC by causing agglutination of the parasite. The antigenic determinant recognized by mc Ab 13 C11 is located on a major glycoprotein (MW 230 000) of the mature parasite. The synthesis and insertion of this glycoprotein into the schizont membrane was observed and the relations between the intraerythrocytic schizont and the exoerythrocytic merozoite components recognized by 13 C11 were defined. This monoclonal was also used to analyse the processing of the 230 000 MW plasmalemma component to lower MW products which were present on the surface of the invasive merozoite and which may play a role in the invasion process.
