Further analysis of perinatal deaths at the UCH . Of these emergency admissions were either selected inappropriately for obstetric care at the referral center or did not have any maternity care. In 65% of all the perinatal deaths, intrauterine death occurred before admission. While antepartum hemorrhage (APH) was the most important single obstetric complication associated with stillbirth, mechanical obstruction and APH contributed significantly to the total perinatal deaths. PNMR in this environment can be reduced by: appropriate selection of cases for obstetric care by private maternity homes and health centers; provision of more well equipped maternity centers; adequate transportation for the transfer of referrals; establishment or regional blood transfusion services, and health education to encourage usage of services provided.
