Trends in perinatal mortality rates at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Nigeria

Consecutive perinatal deaths (560) among 13,629 deliveries over a 5 yr period at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) were analyzed. The overall perinatal mortality was 33.7/1000. This figure was significantly lower (P < 0.001) than that (80.9/1000) for the previous period, 1974-1976. There were several factors responsible for the reduction in the perinatal mortality rate: these include; the introduction of simple perinatal health care measures in the obstetrics and neonatal services; reduction in fetal deaths from antepartum hemorrhage (APH) and decrease in the incidence of neonatal asphyxia.
