Role of gender in health disparity: the South Asian context

This paper discusses the types of discrimination faced by girls and women in South Asian countries such as Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, including sex selective abortions, neglect of girls, and maternal mortality due to poor access to health care, which are all usually dependent on the decisions made by husbands or elder members of his family. It is concluded that policy makers, programme managers, health professionals, and human rights workers in South Asia need to be aware of and responsive to the detrimental health effects that sexual discrimination plays throughout the life cycle.
