The Human Development Index, used to rank countries according to their order of development, is outlined and applied to countries in South Asia and South-East Asia (Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Philippines, Indonesia, Maldives, Vietnam, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Cambodia, Bhutan). Food production, food availability and distortions in the pattern of food production in these countries are reviewed. The nutrition situation in these countries is discussed with reference to the elimination of famine, the control of nutritional deficiency diseases (kwashiorkor, goitre, anaemia), child mortality and low birth weights.
