Assay of effect of single and multiple parasitic infestation on somatic growth and blood haemoglobin

In Egypt, of 440 schoolchildren examined for helminth infections, 218 were found to be infected. Most had double or triple infections; Schistosoma haematobium and/or S. mansoni was present in 92%, Ascaris in 41.2%, hookworm in 30.7%, Hymenolepis nana in 16.9% and Enterobius vermicularis in 0.5% of positive cases; one had Strongyloides stercoralis. Growth and haemoglobin levels appeared to be depressed in infected children particularly those with multiple infections.
