Mean vitamin E in blood serum of 40 healthy men and women, of 40 hyperthyroid and 40 hypothyroid patients and of 25 healthy children and 25 with protein malnutrition was 1.3, 0.7, 1.5, 0.9 and 0.6 mg/100 ml, respectively. Lipid peroxide was 3.9, 2.5, 3.1, 2.2 and 1.8 nmol/ml. Serum inhibitory capacity to lipid peroxidation using rat brain homogenate as substrate was totally abolished in malnutrition, decreased to about 50% in hyperthyroidism and to about 33% in hypothyroidism compared with that in controls. It is concluded that vitamin E in serum is related to circulating lipid peroxides.
