Neuroblastoma cells induced to differentiate by coculture with glial cells differentiate efficiently and can be healthily maintained in culture for long periods. The same type of culture maintained in the continued presence of interferon shows an inhibition of cell migration, cells form short distorted axons and many cells fail altogether to differentiate. At a later stage of culture polynuclear monsters with little nuclear membranes appear. Interferon-containing cultures nevertheless incorporate markedly more nucleic acid and protein precursors than do control cultures without interferon. Neuroblastoma cells in conditions of normal growth grow only slightly more slowly in the presence of interferon than in its absence.
