This article reports the results of therapeutic effect and hemorheological changes in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) before and 10 days adter Radix Angelicae Sinensis (RAS) administration. Patients treated with dextran-40 served as controls. No differences in therapeutic efficacy and hemorheological changes were found in the RAS group and control group (p > 0.05). Evidence is presented that the amelioration of neurological symptoms and signs is associated with a significant improvement in hemorheological changes in the patients treated with RAS. The preliminary results suggest that the action of RAS in AIS may be chiefly to change the two dynamic equibria in blood (i.e. coagulation .dblarw. fibrinolysis, and aggregation .dblarw. disaggregation) and may be associated with the possible effect of the drug on hemorheology.
