Notes on a collection of bats from the riverine forests of the jubba valley southern somalia including two species new to somalia

Fifty-eight bats of eight species were collected from the riverine forests of the Middle Jubba Valley, Somalia during August and September 1986. Epomophorus wahlbergi was the most commonly-caught species. Two species Pipistrellus eisentrauti and Scotoecus albigula had not been previously recorded for Somalia and two other species, Nycteris parisii and Hipposideros commersoni, are rare within Somalia. Seven of the eight species showed evidence of breeding during this period (dry season). The forests are rapidly being destroyed and there is an urgent need to conserve the remaining stretches of riverine forest to protect the rare species.
