HIV-1 in Somalia: prevalence and knowledge among prostitutes

In 1990 a survey of risk groups in Mogadishu, Merca and Chismayu, all urban areas located on the Indian Ocean, showed an HIV-1 seroprevalence among the study participants of 16/1000 population and 30/1000 prostitutes. No HIV-1 infection was detected in 105 STD patients, 26 male partners of prostitutes, 147 tuberculosis patients and 64 military cadets. Knowledge of preventive measures against HIV infection was extremely low among prostitutes, whereas 65% of men and 46% of non-prostitute women were able to identify at least 1 preventive measure.Hilary Richardson.
