The phagocytic activity of monocytes obtained from normal monkeys receiving the antimalarial agent quinine sulfate (26.66 mg/kg body wt, 3 times a day for 7 days) orally, was assessed against antibody-coated sheep erythrocytes, Staphylococcus aureus and latex particles. Quinine caused inhibition of in vitro phagocytic activity during the course of its administration and this inhibition correlated well with its plasma level and time of exposure. There was recovery in the monocyte function with drop in the quinine plasma level. Thus, the in vivo effect of quinine on monocytes was reversible. The in vitro effect was more marked and irreversible.
