A general microsensitive assay method for transaminases

A simple microsensitive procedure for the assay of transaminase activity [in rat liver, Setaria cervi, Litomosoides carinii, Dipetalonema viteae], based on the formation of labeled glutamate from [14C].alpha.-ketoglutarate, is described. .alpha.-Ketoglutarate left unused in the reaction mixture is converted into hydrazone and removed by extraction with ethyl acetate. Radioactivity now left in aqueous phase, in the form of glutamate, provides an index for transaminase activity.
