A natural outbreak of Newcastle disease in pigeons in the Sudan

The disease, first noticed in the Omdurman District of Khartoum Province in March 1982, spread over northern and northeastern Omdurman until May, causing high mortality in pigeon flocks. The morbidity rate was 100% and the mortality rate 80%. Birds that recovered took a month to do so. Cross HI tests showed that the paramyxovirus was a strain of Newcastle disease virus identical with that occurring in fowls. Predisposing factors may have been unusually hot weather and a virus strain of high virulence.
