On the tissular parasitism of Trypanosoma cruzi Y strain in Swiss mice

Swiss-Webster mice infected with T. cruzi strain Y (after 4 years of weekly serial passage) were killed at 7, 10 and 12 days after inoculation. This strain seemed to have a preference for smooth, skeletal and cardiac muscle, with only low transitory parasitism of the liver and spleen. There was heavy parasitism of the bladder, spermatic duct and testes in some mice, and the heavy parasitism of the pancreas may be the main reason for the strain pathogenicity to mice. Parasites were not found in the CNS, kidney or tongue. The high macrophagotropism previously associated with the Y strain was not seen in these mice and may be due to previous use of younger mice or longer passage.
