Cortical afferent inputs into the superior colliculi in the cat

By means of retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase, afferent cortical sources of the colliculi anteriores projections have been revealed. Two main sources were detected: the optic area of the cortex (field 17) and Clare-Bishop's area. A great number of marked neurons is seen in these areas. Neurons of the associative, acoustic, motor, frontal and limbic cortex also send their processes to the colliculi anteriores. The main sources of the afferents to the colliculi anteriores are the large and middle size pyramids in the V layer of the cortex.
