From newly emerged adults of Simulium damnosum from the Kaduna River, northern Nigeria, a mosquito-virulent strain of Bacillus sphaericus was isolated. The isolate had an LC50 of 50 spores/ml for 4th-instar larvae of Culex pipiens and was less virulent for Anopheles stephensi (400 spores/ml) and Aedes aegypti (800 spores/ml). In another 4 cases, a non-virulent strain of B. sphaericus was present.
