Some recent research carried out in the German Federal Republic is summarised. This covers the following topics: (1) the estimation of mean degree of heterozygosity from marker genes, (2) the correlation between degree of heterozygosity and fitness traits such as fertility and milk yield, and (3) recommendations on matings to raise the av. degree of heterozygosity.
