ABO blood groups in giardiasis in some African ethnic groups in Kenya

The association between ABO blood groups and susceptibility to infection with Giardia lamblia was studied in 258 patients drawn from two ethnic groups, the nilotic and the bantu, in Western Kenya. Analysis of both the genotype and phenotype frequencies by statistical methods (.chi.2), does not suggest any association between ABO blood groups and susceptibility to infection with Giardia lamblia. These findings contrast those reported in Australian children by other workers. It is suggested that more studies on this association especially with HLA antigens alongside ABO blood groups be carried out.
