Posttreatment benefits to junior high school students, 7th-9th graders, from participation in elementary school-based weekly fluoride mouthrinsing program using a 0.2% neutral NaF solution are described. The children participated for 4-6 yr (109-170 scheduled rinse sessions, respectively) and had ceased rinsing for 0.5-2.5 yr. There was a 38.6% decrease in DMFT [decayed, missing and filled teeth] and a 41.5% decrease in DMFS [decayed, missing and filled surfaces] compared to the caries prevalence scores of junior high school students who were examined before the rinsing program began.
