The in vitro antiviral effect of 3 chemotherapeutic substances, nalidixic acid (NA), piromidic acid (PA) and oxolinic acid (O.A.) was studied by using RNA and DNA viruses coxsackievirus type B4, echovirus type 19, poliovirus type 1, herpes simplex type 1, adenovirus type 6 and vaccinia virus. Evaluation of the antiviral activity of the compounds was based on the viral inhibition index (VII) as determined by titration (median tissue culture infectious dose) of the viruses by the Reed and Muench method, with and without added drugs, for a determined time of exposition to the substances and at different concentrations. The results show that the 3 substances presented a satisfactory antiviral activity, acting on RNA and/or DNA viruses, specially on those without an envelope.
