Three strains belonging to the H5N3 subtype were isolated from the faeces of whistling swans (Cygnus columbianus) in San-in District, Western Japan in November 1983. Although the strains were not pathogenic for SPF chicks, all were lethal for chick embryos. The strains did not form plaques in the absence of trypsin.
