Primary bronchogenic carcinoma in young adults

Cases (12) of primary bronchogenic carcinoma in young adults are reported. Of the 12 cases there were 9 males and 3 females. The ages ranged from 23-30, with an average of 27.42 yr. They comprised 5.74% of a total of 209 lung carcinoma patients admitted to the hospital in the same period. Of the 12 patients, 11 (91.67%) had symptoms of cough and chest pain, 7 (58.3%) hemoptysis, 6 (50%) chest distress and 8 (66.7%) lymph node metastasis. The primary lesions of 10 cases were situated in the hilus and 2 of the peripheral type in the right lung. The diagnosis of all cases were proved histopathologically. There were 6 cases (50%) of undifferentiated carcinoma, 4 (33.3%) of squamous cell carcinoma, and 2 (16.7%) of adenocarcinoma. Most of the cases were in late stages. No therapeutic effect of chemotherapy was noticed and the prognosis was poor.
