The relative effectiveness of Nytal (monofilament nylon gauze with a mesh size of 100 micro m) and muslin in sieving out cyclopoid copepods [mainly Mesocyclops leuckarti], which are vectors of guinea-worm (Dracunculus medinensis), was determined in studies in the laboratory and homes in 2 hamlets of an endemic village, Padra, in the Dungarpur District of Rajasthan, India. In the laboratory, no cyclops of any development stage passed through Nytal, while 2-5% (mainly nauplii) passed through muslin. In the homes, Nytal pieces were more acceptable than muslin pieces for filtering water and were used solely for filtering water.
