The mode of activating effect of Mg2+ and Co2+ on glucose isomerase from Actinomyces [Streptomyces] olivocinereus 154 was studied and the main kinetic constants were calculated. The activating effect of Mg2+ is of the non-competitive type, that of Co2+ is of the synergistic type. Simultaneous application of optimal concentrations of these cations results in the enzyme activation of a mixed type. Mg2+ produces a stronger activating effect than Co2+, but the latter plays a key role in the enzyme protection against heat inactivation.
