Data on the occurrence of disease agents (including cestodes, nematodes and protozoa) in sewage, the effect of sewage purification on disease agents and the epidemiological significance of the presence of disease agents in sludge are reviewed and discussed in detail. Policies regarding the use of sludge in agriculture vary considerably in different central European countries; those of the GFR and Switzerland are thought exemplary. The development of EEC directives in safer sewage utilization in agriculture is suggested.
