Lytic bacteria in the active sludge of a biochemical sewage treatment station

The quantity and ecologic role of lytic bacteria in biocenoses of activated sludge of a biochemical sewage treatment plant were studied. The lytic bacteria are established to be an obligatory component of the aeration tank biocenosis. They can lyse a blue-green algae (cyanobacteria), saprophytes and conditionally pathogenic microorganisms, thus providing the biotic regulation of the species composition and density of microbial populations. Lytic bacteria are discussed from the standpoint of their significance in sewage decontamination from pathogenic microorganisms.
