Role of haemagglutinating Bacteroides asaccharolyticus in clinical infections

Hemagglutinating (HA) activity of 39 B. asaccharolyticus and 64 B. melaninogenicus strains were studied with RBC of different animal and human sources. HA activity of cell bound nature was found to be a uniquely differentiating feature of B. asaccharolyticus strains primarily belonging to the oral cavity. The strongest HA activity was obsered with RBC of sheep and fowl and the least with that of human B type. Of 19 clinical isolates of B. asaccharolyticus, 5 (26.3%) showed HA activity. No other strain of B. melaninogenicus/B. asaccharolyticus group (60) showed HA activity.
