Whey antibody preparation: effects of prepartum injection on milk production in dairy cows

Trials involving 1 experimental and 8 private herds, in which cows were subcutaneously injected with a commercial whey antibody (Impro Mastitis Blend Antibody) preparation 5-7 days before the expected day of calving, showed no significant differences between cows given the preparation and controls injected with 0.9% NaCl or filtered whey. There was no indication that the whey antibody preparation increased milk production, reduced the average number of services per conception or reduced health problems; incidences of mastitis, retained placenta and uterine infection were slightly higher in cows treated with the preparation than in controls.
