A prospective study of the nutritional status of patients with acute myocardial infarction

Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is a significant catabolic event. The nutritional status of 31 patients with uncomplicated AMI was evaluated an average of 6 days after the onset of the infarction. No significant change in visceral protein status, with normal average values for serum albumin, serum transferrin and total lymphocyte count was noted. Cell mediated immunity response was more variable, with the response in 16 adequate, 9 moderate and 5 negative. The most significant finding was a mean net loss of 7.2 g N. Signficant N turnover occurs in uncomplicated AMI.
