Effect of measles on cell mediated immunity

Thirty-four children, 6 mo. to 4 yr old, were investigated to find out the effect of measles on cell mediated immune (CMI) response. Twenty-two age matched children who did not suffer from measles served as controls. Follow up over a period of 6 mo. was done to find the duration of immunosuppression and its relationship to morbidity. CMI response was observed to be significantly depressed in children following measles. The degree of immunosuppression was similar in well nourished and undernourished children. In children who suffered from measles, morbidity was significantly high for a period of 6 mo., during which the immunosuppression was severe.
