Episodes of stone colic showed a significant higher frequency during winter and autumn than in summer and spring in contrast to previous reports from other geographic areas. The clinical severity of urolithiasis was considerably less in a random patient material from general practice as compared to a selected patient group corresponding to patients in hospital. An etiological examination of recurrent stone formers may be adequately carried out in general practice. Two consecutive 24 h urine collections were essential for an etiological classification of these patients. Thiazide had a significantly more positive effect than placebo on stone prophylaxis in recurrent stone formers without hyperuricosuria. This effect seemed not to be related to urinary Ca excretion.
