Seven warning signals are given to inform the public about cancer-relevant symptoms which make it important to consult a physican. Door-to-door interviews and interviews with patients in general practice shiw that people have broad perceptions of these signals. Of 299 persons, 25% claimed they had 1 of 2 of the 7 signals during the past 2 mo. Half of the persons who answered that they had experienced warning signals contacted a physican because of this. Of 95 patients in general practice, 28% claimed they had presented at least 1 such signal during a consultation immediately preceding the interview, whereas the general practitioners had recorded such signals only in 9% of the same patients.
