Chemically (CY) or surgically (BX) bursectomized, and intact transient-paralysis (TP)-susceptible G-B2 and G-B3 chicks (3-3.5 weeks old) were inoculated with spleen cells (1-2 X 107 i/p) from G-B1 (TP resistant) or G-B2 fowl infected with GA strain Marek's disease virus (MDV). Six birds from each treatment were killed at 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13 days after inoculation and examined for cell associated MDV infection (spleen cells), and cell-free MDV in feather follicle epithelium. The birds were observed for signs of TP on days 8-18 after inoculation. In the intact control groups an average of 56.4% showed signs of TP, 9-11 days after inoculation. All affected birds recovered within 48 h. No CY or BX birds showed signs of TP. These results suggest that TP is an antibody mediated disorder.
