Disseminated Strongyloides stercoralis: a fatal case eluding diagnosis

A fatal disseminated S. stercoralis infection is reported in a 62-year-old man in the USA; he was born in Trinidad but had lived in the USA for the last 20 years. Despite extensive investigation, the patient could not be shown to harbour the parasite before his death. It is suggested that the benefits of presumptive treatment appear to outweigh its risks.
