Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection as a consequence of immunosuppressive treatment

A 38-year-old man from Surinam who had immigrated to The Netherlands 9 years earlier, developed persistent vomiting, epigastric distress and abdominal distension 2 months after kidney transplantation. Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection was demonstrated. The patient was treated successfully with thiabendazole. The need for a careful search for Strongyloides in any person who has resided in the tropics and who is going to receive immunosuppressive treatment is emphasized.
