As part of a study to assess the epidemiology of jaw tumours in Nyanza Province with special reference to Burkitt's Lymphoma, a study of 56 patients attending the Nyanza Provincial General Hospital at Kisumu was conducted between June 1982 and December, 1983. 25 cases (44.6%) were due to Burkitt's Lymphoma, 5 (8.9%) squamous cell carcinoma and 2 (3.6%) osteogenic sarcoma giving an overall 57.1% malignancy in the series. Among the benign tumours, fibrous epulis was the most frequently encountered 8 (14.3%) followed by ameloblastoma 3 (5.4%) and papillary hyperplasia 3 (5.4%). The other tumours seen in order of decreasing frequency were lipoma, odontoma, fibroma, angiomatous epulis, angiofibroma, fibrolipoma, giant cell reparative granuloma and fibropapilloma. The significant features of the predominant Burkitt's lymphoma are discussed. A community-based epidemiological study of the problem in Nyanza Province has been planned in order to elucidate specifically the problem of Burkitt's lymphoma with specific reference to malaria endemicity.
