Of 6896 faecal samples collected from inhabitants of Rusinga Island, Mbita Division, Nyakach, Seme and Kisumu (all bordering the shores of Lake Victoria) in Nyanza Province, Kenya, 977 (14.2%) were positive for hookworm and 1196 (17.3%) for Ascaris lumbricoides. The highest prevalences of hookworm (18.8% of 916) and ascariasis (39.6%) were on Rusinga Island. Infection rates were highest in 11- to 15-year-olds and tended to be low in 0- to 4-year-olds, except in Rusinga. Apart from Rusinga, infection rates increased to a peak at 11 to 15 years old and then decreased with increasing age. There were no differences in infection rates between the sexes.
