Serum lipids and lipoproteins were estimated in 33 epileptic children who were treated with phenobarbital, valproate and carbamazepine. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol was significantly more in the epileptic children than in 2 control groups: healthy nonepileptic children and epileptic children before starting anticonvulsant treatment. The findings indicate that anticonvulsant drugs should be added to the list of substances which affect serum HDL cholesterol.
