It has already been suggested that about 80 to 90% of human cancer are caused by environmental carcinogens which are closely related to daily life of humans. In the beginning of this review, the detection of the environmental carcinogens and their nature were briefly mentioned. Subsequently, the historic background which led to a new understanding of the two-stage theory of carcinogenesis of Berenblum and the concept of the classification of carcinogens according to their mutagenicity, i.e., genotoxic and nongenotoxic carcinogens, were explained. Problems in evaluation of environmental carcinogens thus classified were also discussed.
