A retrospective study was carried out over 5 yr (1976-1980) on the susceptibility pattern of S. typhi to some commonly used antibiotics with special reference to chloramphenicol. S. typhi isolated during 1976-1977 were not resistant to chloramphenicol. Chloramphenicol resistance first appeared in 1978; a steady increase in resistance followed. The level of resistance, as determined by minimum inhibitory concentrations, was high. Phage typing of the isolates showed that the majority of strains of S. typhi resistant to chloramphenicol belonged to phage type O biotype II.
