Clinical evaluation of centbutindole as an anti-psychotic agent

Centbutindole in a dose range of 1 to 4 mg b.d. led to significant overall improvement in initial pathology when administered to 20 schizophrenic patients over a 4 wk period. The improvement was maintained during the 5th wk of placebo trial period indicating a sustained duration of action. Symptoms which responded best were, in descending order, hallucinatory behavior, suspiciousness, blunted affect, unco-operativeness and emotional withdrawal. Extrapyramidal reactions were common treatment side effects. Centbutindole thus appears to be an effective antipsychotic agent with a possible incisive action.
