Further clinical trials with oxamniquine (UK 4271) , a new anti-schistosomal agent

Oxamniquine was tested against Schistosoma mansoni at 12.5 mg/kg body-weight in 112 patients and 15 mg/kg in 115 others, 95 of whom were treated with capsules and 20 with syrup. The drug was generally tolerated and side effects were more pronounced when treatment was given on an empty stomach than after a meal. Serum transaminase levels increased slightly in a few people, bilirubin levels did not change, and 6 of 52 males showed urinary changes characterized by haematuria and/or proteinuria. 54 of 66 people given 12.5 mg/kg were cured, as were 43 of 52 given 15 mg/kg in capsules.
