An inverse relationship between neutralizing antibody levels and immunospecific in vitro stimulation of human blood lymphocytes to herpes simplex virus type 1 antigens was demonstrated both in patients with recurrent cold sores (r = -0.8) and in normal controls (r = -0.29). Higher mean herpes-specific stimulation index (SI) and antibody K value was detected in patients with recurrent cold sores (SI = 7.84 .+-. 0.93, K value 0.55 .+-. 0.10) when compared with normal controls (SI = 3.23 .+-. 0.62, K value = 0.36 .+-. 0.19). None of the patients had antibody K values in the range of 0.9-1.5, which suggests bimodal distribution of sera. Generation of suppressor cells following immune-complex formation might have interfered with antigen-specific proliferation of lymphocytes.
