Influence of extracellular ions on cardiotonic effects of BDPU [1- (butyl-3 (1- (6,7 dimethoxyquinazoline 4-yl) piperidine 4-yl) urea)

BDPU (400 ng), a specific Ca channel blocker, inhibited the responses to BDPU significantly. When NaCl concentration was halved (55 mM) the responses to BDPU were significntly potentiated, whereas increase in NaCl concentration (165 mM) inhibited the responses to BDPU significantly. Responses to BDPU were significantly potentiated when KCl concentration was halved (0.9 mM) and were significantly inhibited when the KCl concentration was doubled (3.6 mM). BDPU induced positive inotropic effects are probably due to inhibition of the Na-K ATPase pump.
