Value of sialography in the diagnosis of parotid and submandibular gland tumors

40 patients clinically suspected of a tumor of the parotid gland, and 2 patients suspected of tumor of the glandula submandibular, were subjected to fractionated sialography at the Radiological Clinic of Münster University in the course of five years. In 31 cases (74%), the tumor was confirmed. In 11 patients (26%) no suspicion of tumour was possible even on retrospective examination of the x-ray films. Hence, the value of sialography is more in the direction of pre-operative exclusion of other types of disease, especially of stone formation. However, it is to be expected that the introduction of axial CT sialography will significantly improve the accuracy of tumour diagnosis, because this method enables examination and assessment of the glandular parenchyma besides an examination of the parotid duct.
