Results of experience with renal adenocarcinoma in 93 patients operated on between 1973-1982 are reviewed. Simple nephrectomies for palliation were performed in 4 patients and the remainder underwent radical nephrectomy. The operative mortality was 4%. The overall survival time was 2.3 yr. The 5 yr survival was as follows: for patients with pathologic stage 1 disease, 62% for stage 2 disease, 43%; for stage 3 disease, 43%; and stage 4 disease, 0%. Review of the literature indicates the contribution of radical nephrectomy with early ligation of the renal artery and vein and regional lymphadenectomy.
