Bactericidal index in burns

The bactericidal index (BI) was evaluated in patients with burns and the influence of humoral and cellular immunity on BI was assessed. BI was significantly depressed in burn cases. It was inversely proportional to the extent of burns and had a definite pattern of periodicity for smaller burns (< 25% involvement). Initial deep trough on the 3rd day was followed by complete recovery by the end of the 12th day. BI was influenced by the levels of serum Ig and T cells. Increasing values reflected a beneficial effect on the bactericidal index.
