Mermithid nematodes in the Anopheles mosquitoes of Bastar district, Madhya Pradesh

A survey was conducted in Bastar District, Madhya Pradesh, India, in 1980-81 to determine the extent of parasitization of Anopheles spp. by mermithid nematodes. Examination of a total of 19 079 specimens belonging to 18 species of Anopheles revealed mermithids in 110 specimens belonging to 7 species, A. annularis, A. culicifacies, A. hyrcanus, A. maculatus, A. pallidus, A. subpictus and A. vagus. Nematodes were found mainly in females, and multiple infections were common. Infection rates were highest (18.18-25.45%) in July-September. From March 1980 to December 1981, 19 079 adult and larval Anopheles mosquitoes from 22 villages in Bastar District, Madhya Pradesh, India, were examined. Only 110 belonging to 7 species harboured mermithids. Most infections occurred in females. No mermithids were found in November or December.
