The animals did not grow on this diet, and all died in 3 1/2 mos., some (beer drinkers) died in 14 days. Fatty changes occurred in the liver within 2 wks., later there was atrophy of the gastric mucosa. The animals developed an acute ulcerative colitis with gangrene of the colonic mucosa. Death was usually sudden due to adrenal apoplexy. Most infant deaths among the Bantu are due to gastro-enteritis. This may be due to diet, and not to infection as is commonly believed.
